Some properties are sold.
Others carry a lifetime of stories.
In 1967, Dad Darling arrived in Cape Town from Port Elizabeth, fulfilling his dream of becoming a teacher. Mom Darling had travelled from East London to Cape Town to pursue her calling as a nurse. Together, they bought their home in Surrey Estate for just R7,000.
And so began their Darling story.

Mom and Dad Darling had three children — Mark, Janine and Brendan. It was in this very home that their youngest son, Brendan, was born.
As the years passed, life took each of the children in different directions. Janine married and left the family home in 1993, while Mark immigrated in 1991. Brendan remained closely connected to the home that had been part of his story from the very beginning.
But this house was never only a home to the Darling family.
Over the years, its doors were opened to many others. Boarders from Port Elizabeth came to Cape Town to study and found a place to stay. Mom Darling went on to become a nursing lecturer at Tygerberg College, and some of the students she taught were welcomed into the family home too.
It became a place of learning, sharing, caring and community.
A home filled with people, conversations, laughter, memories and countless moments that can never truly be measured in rands.
Mom and Dad Darling were married for 55 years before Dad passed away.
Mom also spent her final years in the home that had held so much of their lives.Brendan remained in the family home and cared for both his parents until they passed.... allowing them to spend their final years in the home they had built their life in.

And then came September.
A particularly difficult month for Brendan and Mark as they said goodbye to their only sister Janine, while also facing the emotional reality of handing over the family home.
There are moments in life when we have to acknowledge that a chapter has come to an end... not because the memories are finished, but because it is time to make room for what comes next.
So today, as I hand over this very special property, I do so with enormous respect for the history held within those walls.

Brendan, may you carry the beautiful memories with you as you step into this next chapter.
And knowing the blessing you have been to so many people, particularly the elderly, I have no doubt that there are beautiful things still ahead for you.
May God bless you and keep you.
May He make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you.
And may He guide your steps as you move forward.
