Andrew Wolhuter spent 18 years in the UAE cabin crew, then cabin manager, then learning and development director for thousands of people across some of the Middle East's biggest hotel groups before moving back to Cape Town earlier this year with no furniture, no local network to speak of, and a consultancy to build from scratch.

Its Heritage Day, and we will be closed to Day Pass guests and tours for the public holiday.

It is one of those days worth actually pausing for. South Africa carries an extraordinary range of cultures, languages, and stories, and Heritage Day exists specifically to acknowledge that. Not to flatten it into a single narrative, but to sit with the complexity of it.

This is what my September content calendar looks like right now: 54 posts, 4 brands, scheduled and live.

We built Alfrid, the tool behind this content engine, right here at Cape Town Office. It started as a problem I kept running into, then turned into something we could actually solve without breaking the bank!

The ideas bounced around, the feedback on early rough versions, the developer who helped turn a frustration into a working tool, all of it came out of this coworking network.

That's the part of coworking that doesn't show up on a floor plan. You get a desk and decent wifi, sure, but you also get a room full of people with skills and expertise in areas outside of your own.

What does it take to hold the attention of a room full of CEOs and C-suite executives?

According to Andrew Wolhuter, it is not a better presentation. It is better data specifically, their own.

Andrew is a certified psychometrician. He works with senior leadership teams using psychometric assessments, and his point is straightforward: generic training slides get tuned out. Individual data, interpreted properly, cannot be ignored.

He has a tattoo of a brain on his arm. His breakdown of his own expertise 30% neuroscience, 40% behavioural psychology, 30% physiology tells you this is not a professional interest. It is a genuine obsession.

Spring has a way of making you look at your habits honestly.

Not with guilt — just with fresh eyes. The mornings are longer, the light is back, and that low-grade inertia that builds up through winter starts to ease. It's a good time to ask whether the way you've been working is actually working for you.

For a lot of independent workers and small business owners, the answer is: mostly, but not quite. The routine is holding, but the environment needs a change. The work is getting done, but the energy behind it has flatlined.

Changing your workspace is one of the simplest, most underrated resets there is. We've watched it work for fifteen years.

At 25, Andrew Wolhuter was managing cabin crew on flights carrying 400 passengers. He was Etihad's youngest cabin manager at the time and he had no idea it was just the beginning of a career that would take him through aviation, luxury hospitality, corporate L&D, and eventually back to Cape Town to start his own consultancy.

His story isn't one of those straight-line success narratives. There were wrong turns. A job he was completely unqualified for. Two years that nearly broke him. A title he thought would make him happy and didn't.

What it is, though, is honest. And genuinely useful if you've ever wondered whether the unconventional path you're on is actually going somewhere.

We sat down with Andrew at Cape Town Office for the next episode of Who's Behind the Desk. It's a good one.

There are courts in parts of Africa where judges have been applying laws they've never actually read — not because they're negligent, but because the law simply wasn't accessible to them.

Greg Kempe, co-founder of Laws.Africa, shared that with us this week. It's the kind of detail that makes you sit back for a second.

Laws.Africa is a Cape Town-based nonprofit digitising legal information across twenty African countries — legislation, court judgments, government gazettes — and making it freely available online. Greg built the technology side of it after six years at Amazon, a burnout, and a walk along the Sea Point Promenade that somehow led to municipal bylaws.

The conversation covers how the nonprofit actually sustains itself, why generative AI needs grounded legal data to be useful rather than dangerous, and what it means to build something that probably wouldn't exist if you didn't build it.
