HERITAGE MONTH: Kuils River’s History

The oldest church building in Kuils River, now the Sarepta United Reformed Church, has an interesting story.

In the early 1800s, Mrs Johanna van der Berg (also known as “moeder Jana”), her husband and five children resided at the very site of the current church building. Back then, moeder Jane and her family had to walk 5 hours on a Sunday to attend church in Stellenbosch.

As moeder Jane grew older, the long walk was no longer possible for her. She hoped for a church to be established closer to home, even offering her home as a place where services could be held. In 1842 moeder Jane’s dream came true, when the land next to her home was purchased and donated to the Rhenish Mission. In 1843 a church building which could accommodate 300 people was completed.

For 104 years, the church was managed by the Rhenish Mission and, in 1947, the congregation was absorbed by the NG Church.

HERITAGE MONTH: Kuils River’s History

Did you know that Kuils River was once the home to C.H. Kühn (1903–1968), a South African author and poet? His works were published under the pseudonym "Mikro". Arguably his most famous work is “Ruiter in die Nag”.

Mikro lived in Louw Street, Kuils River, until about 1950. His house still stands today and we include a photo of the original structure.

During his more than 37 year residency in Kuils River, Mikro worked as a teacher, school principal of De Kuilen Primary School and, later, full time writer. Mikro Primary School, the suburb of Mikro Park and Mikro Street are all named after him.

In 1700, Captain Olof-Berg bought the land known then as De Kuile and retired here. The land was later divided into smaller parcels along the river upon which mostly vegetables were grown. Eventually the farmers focused on chickens and vineyards, which proved more profitable.

In 1828, Colonel Charles Michell was appointed as the Surveyor-General of the Cape Colony. During his term, the “town” of Kuils River was surveyed. Mitchell Street (incorrectly spelt) is named after him.

On the 3rd of December 1926, the first council members assumed office and the Kuils River Local Area Board came into existence. Until then, Kuils River fell under Stellenbosch.

On the 22nd of November 1940, the Kuils River was declared a Village Management Board Area, elevating the local council to town council.

At first the council rented space in the old Boland Bank for R2 per month, later using the building that housed the first post office – the current location of Da Gama Fisheries. We attach a photo of the first post office building.
