Saint Helena Bay, a historic coastal town probably best known for Vasco da Gama making landfall on 4th November 1497 and naming it Bahai Santa Elena after the religious mother of Constantine the Great. Few people know Vasco and his sailors were involved in a “misunderstanding” with the local Khoi inhabitants who, fearing an attack, threw spears, wounding Vasco in his leg.
Saint Helena Bay perhaps boasts some of the world's prime commercial fishing and cape rock lobster industries. The town is home to Sandy Point Harbor - one of two ports in the bay, the other being in Laaiplek (the place where ships loaded salted fish and wheat) on the Berg River – a short distance away from St. Helena Bay.
In winter, the area is host to considerable fishing activities, primarily when the annual snoek makes their appearance. The bay also frequently sees large shoals of pelagic fish like sardines, herring and mackerel being pursued by dolphins and toothed whales.
This small rural town is an annual destination for outdoor and nature lovers exploring the outlying, picturesque landscapes. The spring flower season brings an enormous influx of tourists to the area to view the magical burst of wildflowers filling the area with vibrant shades of colour.
During whale season (June to December), Southern Right and Humpback whales frequent the bay to calve and can be viewed from the shore and closeup in the harbour. More recently, other species of whales have arrived in the area.
The other prominent attraction in this beautiful town is Shelley Point Estate - well known for its luxury hotel, golf course and lighthouse- where you will find magnificent views over the bay.
Few people know that Saint Helena Bay is the only area along the South African West Coast where the sun rises across the bay. The reason for this is its unique location, whereby the town itself faces north east and almost north. As a result, there are magical sunrises and sunsets leaving photo enthusiasts in awe.
St Helena Bay is still largely undeveloped, only more recently attracting interest from outside.
If you are therefore interested in buying a sound property investment, then perhaps consider our significant Saint Helena Bay Property portfolio. We have a wide range of good value properties available to suit the financial profile of anyone.
