Prepaid? Mind the 600 units.
On prepaid Domestic and Home User tariffs, the City charges the first 600 kWh you buy in a calendar month at the lower Block 1 rate, and "the block calculation resets at the start of each new calendar month." It doesn't matter which day you buy, because the rate is based on "the total kWh bought in that month" (City of Cape Town).
Our tip (our view, not City advice): stay at 600 units or less a month. Buying up to 600 each month builds a reserve for winter, and in our experience prices rise over time. Just enter your tokens: City policy says unused tokens "shall expire after 36 months".
We're sharing the City of Cape Town's published 2026/27 residential electricity tariffs as a public service. It's the City's information, not ours. Swipe for Home User, Domestic, Lifeline and the new Residential Time of Use tariff.
