Instead of simply switching off entire areas during load-shedding, Clarens pioneered a community load-curtailment system. Residents and businesses work together to reduce electricity use when the national grid is under pressure, helping keep the town’s lights on.

The 24th September is out opening day but also Heritage Day, and Clarens is asking: how are you spending yours?

This year the whole village is part of the answer: with the Clarens Festival of Lights lighting up 24-26 September! Here are 5 ways to make the most of the weekend:

1. Stargazing Tour: gather round a communal fire on as the light traul switches on around you.
2. Art wander: ambre through Clarens' art and light installations and discover some of the local artists.
3. Sunset hike: catch the Maluti foothills glowing gold, then walk back down as the art pieces come to life.
4. Campfire stories: gather around a fire with your family to hear some of the most interesting facts.
5. Take it slow: enjoy some local wine and craft beer, live cultural performances and do it all over again the next day in the Square of Lights.
