Tips on hanging curtains. For many a homeowner, hanging curtains is not as easy as it appears, especially if you also have to mount a curtain rod or track. It`s important to measure up so that curtains completely cover windows and also add extra character and texture to a room.

Take a look at home interiors and you will immediately notice that curtains make a big impact on a room. You can use curtains to introduce colour, pattern and texture all in one.

Curtains are also a way to give the illusion of width, lower a high ceiling or visually widen a window. Curtains are an interior decorator`s magic wand for turning a so-so space into a beautifully decorated interior.

Measuring up for curtains:
Your choice of hanging will determine the total amount of fabric required for making up or buying ready-made curtain panels.
• Pencil Pleats X 1.8 or X 2 for fuller width
• Tab top X 1.5
• Eyelets X 1.5 or X 2 for fuller width
• Generous X 4
Add an extra 3cm to the total width if you want the curtains to overlap at the centre once hung.

If you have a decorative rod and would like this to show, measure the height from the bottom of the rod, allowing for the type of hanging you will use. Some curtain rings and clips are larger than others, so you will need to know in advance the type you will be using.

Dressing up:
Shop around for decorative rods, finials and accessories to add a finishing touch and a dash of glam to your window treatments. Simply by adding a decorative finial, you can create a feature or frame a beautiful view. Tiebacks are another way to dress up a plain window treatment and also help to let in a lot more natural light when curtains are fastened to the sides.

How to get rid of stains on towels.

Towels have a tough life in a large lively family. They are exposed to a whole plethora of stains which are not always easy to clean. Here are some tips that may help:

Baby oil on soft, fluffy towels is a common occurrence. Blot off as much as you can, with tissues or toilet paper. Then rub with dishwashing liquid. Leave for at least ten minutes. Wash as normal.

Blood. If the stains are very fresh, sponge them with cool saline water. Rinse with fresh water. However, if the stains are old, take one part twenty strength hydrogen peroxide to nine parts water. Rinse the stains well in the solution and they should go. If not, make up a mix of oxalic acid, (one teaspoon) to 50 ml water and sponge on. Rinse well. Use rubber gloves.

Chewing gum. Harden the area with ice blocks. Scrape off as much of the gum as you can and then remove any that is left with paraffin.

Coffee. Rinse well in warm water. The stain will fade. Apply glycerine and rub gently. Leave for half an hour or so then wash as you normally would. This works well for curry stains too.

Grass. Sponge well with methylated spirits and then wash as you normally would.

•Keep your phone away from prying eyes, even when you think you’re in a safe, busy place

The biggest drain on your electricity bill.

With double digit electricity price hikes on the way, Eskom has identified those household items which cause the biggest headache when it comes to our monthly bill.

The power utility is expected to raise tariffs in excess of 12% in July, while Johannesburg’s City Power is set to charge household more for electricity during peak periods in a bid to lessen the need for load shedding. The “time-of-use” pricing is also expected from July, and will charge consumers more for electricity usage between the hours of 07h00-10h00 and 18h00-21h00 on weekdays. To incentive a shift in use from the “peak times”, lower than normal pricing will be charged during off-peak times. Eskom noted that geysers eat into as much as 39% of SA consumers’ monthly energy usage.

The state owned company provided the following list of items and how they contribute to your electricity bill:
• Geyser 39%
• Space Heating 16%
• Other 12%
• Stove & Oven 7%
• Lights 6%
• Cold Storage 5%
• Laundry 3%
• Pool Pump 11%
• Other Cooking 1%

Eskom stressed that even in standby mode, TVs, DVD players and set top boxes still use up to 50% off their operating power, while mobile phone charges also continue to draw electricity unless turned off at the plug.

There’s nothing quite like walking across a lush, green lawn. Here’s how to keep your grass looking good. Beautiful, sunny days should be spent outside, preferably while picnicking with friends, or playing a game of catch with the younger members of your family on your beautiful, green lawn. Here’s how to get your picture perfect lawn:
Don’t cut your lawn too short or too often
Cutting your grass too short makes it difficult for your grass to get enough sunlight to be healthy. Repetitive cutting also damages your lawn and gives it even less of a chance to grow. Adjust your lawnmower blade so that it cuts the grass at longer heights. Also, make sure that your blades are sharp. Dull blades tear grass instead of cutting it. This means that your grass will take extra time to repair itself instead of growing thick and green.
Water your lawn well, but at irregular times
Water your lawn at irregular intervals. This will cause the top section of the soil to dry out, which means the grass roots will dig down deeply to reach the water that has been stored there. Watering your lawn frequently means that the roots will not bother to search for water below because there will always be water near the top. Also, grass that is watered too often will create clumps and runners that block soil from being able to access sunlight and water. This weakens your grass.
Post-mowing care
After mowing, leave grass clippings on the lawn. They will break down and compost, which adds nutrients to the soil. Poking holes in your lawn using spiked shoes, a lawn aerator, or even a screwdriver, allows moisture and air to get down into the soil and loosen it up. Fertilise your lawn in late spring and autumn before harsher weather hits to protect your lawn.

If you’re moving from a large house into a small abode, here are tips on how to downsize without compromising on style!

Moving into a small home has many advantages – including less cleaning and maintenance. However, the process may not be easy for the sentimental. Here are a few tips to help make moving into a smaller home as painless as possible.

Think like a designer
It’s hard to part with furniture that you`ve relied on for years but, moving into a smaller home means there might not be space for everything. On a positive note, it’s an excuse to redecorate!

To start, measure each room in the new home and draw up a floor-plan for each space. Look at the scale of your furniture in relation to the size of the room. This will help you decide on pieces of furniture that absolutely have to go or whether you need to buy new furniture altogether.

Lift it off the floor
If you’re starting on a clean slate with new furniture, consider pieces that are raised off the ground. A sofa on legs will help make a room feel open by allowing natural light to shine underneath. And, instead of book cases, install wall shelves to free up floor space.

Match light tones
In small spaces, use light tones for walls, floors and window treatments. Match the shade for a seamless look that will help make the space feel larger.
