Cape Town's Bellville Velodrome to Get a R5-Billion Makeover💶
CAPE TOWN — The City of Cape Town has officially approved a massive R5-billion project to completely upgrade the Bellville Velodrome and its surrounding area.
After nearly 20 years of delays, the city signed a long-term lease with a private developer to transform the site into a huge entertainment and business hub called The Galleria. City leaders say this project will bring a massive boost to the local economy and save the aging facility from falling apart.
What is Changing?
The project will completely transform the area into a lively 24-hour precinct:
A Massive Entertainment Arena: The indoor Velodrome will be rebuilt into a state-of-the-art venue that can hold between 14,000 and 18,000 people for major international concerts and indoor sporting events.
Upgraded Athletics Track: The outdoor running track next to the Velodrome will be saved and completely upgraded with modern facilities for local schools and sports clubs.
New Shops, Offices, and Housing: The surrounding parking lots and open land will be turned into a mix of modern offices, retail stores, restaurants, apartments, and a hotel.
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis explained that the city could never afford to fix and maintain the facility on its own, and that this private investment will ensure the precinct is well-maintained for future generations.
What’s Next?
With final approvals in place, construction preparations are expected to begin soon. The new Galleria precinct is set to completely change the skyline and boost the economy of the Northern Suburbs, turning the area into a premier destination for business and entertainment.
