The history of Verwoerdpark with FIG Properties
Verwoerdpark is a well-established suburb in Alberton, developed during the expansion of Alberton in the 1960s and 1970s as residential demand grew south of Johannesburg. The suburb was named after former South African Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd, a central political figure during the apartheid era.
Historically, the area around modern-day Verwoerdpark formed part of the greater Alberton region, which began as farmland and a small trading settlement in the late 1800s. Alberton itself traces its roots back to Johannes Petrus Meyer, who established a store and homestead in the area around 1890, helping lay the foundation for the town’s growth.
During the apartheid years, areas surrounding the Alberton Dam underwent significant spatial restructuring. Historical records indicate that communities living near the dam were removed, and a white residential suburb was later established in the area, becoming what is now Verwoerdpark.
Today, Verwoerdpark is known as a mature, family-oriented suburb with established homes, schools, parks, shopping centres, and convenient access to major highways such as the N3, N12, and N17. The suburb has grown into a sought-after residential area valued for its community atmosphere and central location within the East Rand and southern Johannesburg region.
