This Month we would like to introduce you to Harties Spekboom Project.
DID YOU KNOW? A Spekboom (aka indigenous eco-warrior) is a succulent that is a master at cleaning air! Pop over to their page for more info and help us create awareness!

Meet Claudie Greenwood-Selby who started this great Harties Spekboom Project

"How it all started. The last few years, I have felt this inner desire to do something good, to be more than just a person earning a living. I have had this desire to give back to our environment, to make our world a better place. To one day leave behind a heritage of some sort.

I grew up in a family who loved gardening, and especially indigenous plants. With garden beds full of succulents and Cacti. I learned from a young age how to propagate succulents. With a “green fingered” family it was impossible not to! My grandmother who I inherited my name from, was known for pinching the smallest of small cuttings, whether it was a succulent leave or branch she used to propagate a plant. My mom Ina, of course, followed in her footsteps, and the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree when it comes to me.

On the 22 August 2019, I saw devastating footage of the Amazon Forest burning, and almost at the same time, I saw a post on social media again about how polluted our air in Hartbeespoort is. I then thought to myself, is there not something I can do about it? What can we do as a community? Not only to try and clean our air in Harties, but at the same time to assist in at least slowing down Global Warming. I then found an article in the Getaway magazine explaining the amazing air cleaning properties of the Spekboom. And this is where my idea was born. I lay awake at night, thinking of how to go about this project I wanted to launch. On Sunday the 22nd October, I woke up with a mission, I started the page: “Harties Spekboom Project” with the aim to clean our Harties air, one Spekboom at a time. I have received huge support from the community, with over 200 plants already distributed and another 300 on order.

I have been invited by Village Mall to do a Spekboom Expo at the mall on 5 & 6 October, Saturday & Sunday from 9am – 2pm. Please come around for a visit, there will be some Spekboom for sale as well. I look forward to meeting everyone! And please remember, I launched this project to create awareness regarding the Spekboom Air cleaning properties in an effort to clean our Harties air. You do not have to purchase a Spekboom through this project. Please support our local nurseries as well. The aim is to plant as many Spekboom as we can, as a community. This project is a way of trying to give back to Mother Nature, doing it in my spare time, as I have a full-time career, which has to pay the bills 😊
