Chilling out in Onrus

Onrus holds a special place in the heart of many a local resident, weekender and holidaymaker. Far removed from the hustle and bustle of Hermanus, yet only a 10-minute drive from town (a bit longer during season!), it is a peaceful haven where locals are often seen out and about, walking their dogs, jogging, meeting up with friends for coffee, or just sitting on a bench overlooking the sea.
It is a welcoming place where everyone seems to know one another and always has time for a chat, or a quick smile and a wave in passing. Friendly customer service is what you can expect everywhere, be it at the Onrus pharmacy, the butchery, the OK Mini Market, or one of the many delis, coffee shops and restaurants. Local businesses cater for every need, eliminating the necessity of driving to town when in need of, say, a dentist, a haircut or hardware for a home project.
The Onrus beach and estuary have always been the main attraction of this area and get even busier during the holiday season as sunbathers, body boarders and surfers flock to this scenic spot known among the locals as “the island”. The old Milkwood Restaurant overlooking the estuary with the Onrus mountains in the background had been a landmark for decades. Renamed Milk on the Beach since being taken over by local chef and entrepreneur Petri Hendriksz, it continues to attract locals and visitors alike with its diverse offering, the quality of its food and service, and the breathtaking views. It came as no surprise when Petri was chosen as the very popular winner of the People’s Choice Award at the recent Hermanus Business Chamber awards ceremony.
Another eatery that is under new ownership is Riposo, a cosy Italian restaurant where Phillip Marais is your gracious host, serving delectable pizzas, small plates and pasta dishes that can be enjoyed inside or out back in the delightful courtyard garden. Riposo has become a firm favourite among the locals and you know what they say – to find the best food, eat where the locals eat. You just have to visit Moltenos to see how true this is. Owner Gordon Wilson has been cooking up a storm here for longer than I care to remember and knows every single customer by name – not all that difficult when diners keep returning year after year!
