Its always wonderful to be able to share the wins when they happen in real estate. But so much more goes on behind the scenes, I thought I would share a bit of the 'not so fun moments' that agents have to deal with.

1. Confirming with clients for viewings and they promise they will be there, early morning or late evenings and you arrive at the property and they are a no show. No answers to your calls or msgs just ghosted. Waste of my time and fuel. Occurs often!

2. Being called on a Sunday by a Seller saying he wants me to sell his house and I must be there in 10 minutes or I dont get the listing. Disrespectful from the start, while im having lunch with my family, no respect that I too have a life outside of work.

3. Begging me to reduce my commission (which already gets split with my company and taxed at 18%) and then asking me to meet builders, painters and assist while their property gets repaired.

4. Refusing to give me a sole mandate, while I do all the price counseling and educate the seller on what is happening in the market. Spend hours driving back and forth to viewings only for the other agent to sell the house after my price counselling has been done. Walking away with nothing.

5. Being asked to rent out a property and I took my own images (I used to be a real estate photographer for 4 years, before I became an agent). Only to find out that the landlord stole my images off the internet to advertise his unit privately. When I told him he doesnt have permission to use them, I got verbally abused and blocked.

6. Being asked to increase the price of a property I had on the market for 3 months by over R200 000, which was getting no interest already, I decided to walk away. To only get met with incredible verbal abuse and being told that I am rotten apple.

7. Booking viewings back to back and waiting for a client at a scheduled 4pm appointment for them to tell me they are on their way, and they will be there at 4.45pm 🤯.

8. Reading comments on social media about how revolting agents are, and how we dont work hard enough for the money we earn. That we are all the same and akin to second hand car salesmen.

I could share so many more stories that are tough and hard to get through. As a property practioner I believe we are incredibly thick skinned and currently working in a highly competitive industry. We work sometimes for 6 months on one deal without any compensation until the very end. We are emotional support systems to our clients, we guide them through the process from listing stage to way after registration. We build client relationships and form friendships with many of our sellers, landlords and tenants. We have a mountain of incredible service providers we can recommend as we work with the best!

Whenever a property is rented or sold, the agent is always the first to be contacted if ANYTHING is needed. We are literally on call 24/7.

This is not a job for the faint hearted and for many years I didnt want to become an agent. Because 'agents' have such a bad name.

Well I can tell you this, some of my favorite people in the world are real estate agents. Because they are kind, compassionate and patient.

So next time you want to paint us all with the same brush, maybe stop a moment and think that behind that label is a real person, working their butt off to make their lives better for them and hopefully everyone who comes in contact with them.
