Positioning - Every position or points on the surface of the earth (including the space) are defined by a coordinate known as X, Y, Z (Փ, λ, Z). Similarly, coordinates defines all physical features or spatial data such as buildings, roads, rivers, bridges e.tc. The acquisition (or capturing) of these features or spatial data are possible with the use of digital surveying and mapping equipment’s and techniques such as Total Station, Differential GPS, Aerial survey (Photogrammetry), Satellite surveys (Remote sensing) 3D scanners, Drones an so on. Using the appropriate software to processing and depict these spatial data translates them into 2D or 3D information that assist in decision before, during and after an infrastructural project is completed.

The emergence of Covid – 19 (Corona virus) pandemic all over the world including Africa and South Africa has led to the exposure of the infrastructural inadequacies in most countries of the world especially the under developed and developing countries. The shortage of drinking and washing water in South Africa’ rural area became part of the challenges the government is addressing during the Covid - 19 lockdown.

HPConsult and EAI conducted an As - built survey of 12kn water pipeline route and reservoirs in QwaQwa, Free State province around March 2020. After the survey, an As-built plan was prepare for the redesign, redirection and the rehabilitation of the existing underground water pipeline needed to provide water for the rural area.

Some of the sewer manhole around Strubens Valley area of Roodepoort needed to be rehabilitated because they were old and blocked with waste that created environmental pollution. During the construction in the year 2019, some of the manhole positions were changed to allow accessibility for future maintenance.

HPConsult was one of the surveying companies that provided the As -Built Survey plans (for the metro municipality) showing all the manhole positions (invert levels and the direction of sewer flow) within a section of Strubens Valley after the rehabilitation. One of the Food manufacturing company at Isando, part of Johannesburg had their sewer manholes and pipes blocked regularly, all effort to resolve this challenge proved unsuccessful. As a result, the factory engineer saw the need for a map showing all the features, manholes, pipes and the direction of sewer flow within the factory premises.

HPConsult provided the detailed map using the combination of a Differential GPS and Total Station. All the Factory facilities, Sewer Manhole, underground pipes and the direction of flow were surveyed and depicted on the mapped. , ,

The need to construct an alternate link bridge from the Rhodesfield area, over R21 highway Kempton Park into the OR Tambo International Airport became obvious to the Metro Municipality in 2018. The design and the construction of the link bridge will reduce the volume of traffic accessing the airport through its major entrance from Kempton park area and the Gautrain terminal in Rhodefield.

HPConsult provided the Detailed Route/Road Survey map with contours (0.5m), profile data and the DTM needed by the engineers for the design of the bridge.

The Municipal official and the management of Ratlou LM saw the need to preserve the life span of the major roads within and those passing through the municipal boundary, Therefore they decided to prepare the Storm Water Master Plan of the major roads since most of them do not have a storm water channels. The consulting engineer and project manager appointed HPConsult in 2018 as the surveying firm to provide all the spatial data required for the master plan report. Due to an increase in urban density, the need for residential and infrastructural development is on the rise all over the country’s major cities, government and the property developers are embarking on various land development projects, ranging from Township creation, private residential estates, Sectional Title Schemes and other structural development. One of the major requirement from the local municipalities and the developer before the construction work begins is the relocation survey (including a beacon certificate) of each erven or that of the site boundary beacons within the Township or development area. Relocation Survey is used to re-establish the cadastral boundary of an existing property or that of an undeveloped landed properties/site, relocation survey helps to avoid any form of encroachment between property boundaries that may lead to a future litigation between property owners.

Amongst the Myriads of relocation survey carried out by HPConsult in the year 2016, one of the properties in Blue Valley Golf Estate, Midrand stood out where the property developer became curious about the precision of a DGPS and its operations, hence he decided to join our team during the relocation survey and the identification of the boundary beacons. The safety of pedestrian became crucial to the government after an increase in accidents were recorded around Pretoria North in the year 2015-16, Consequently the need for the design and the construction of pedestrian walkways along the few roads concerned came into focus. The area considered for the projects were GA Rankuwa, Lotus Garden, Attridgeville and Nelmapius Township, all in Pretoria North Area.

HPConsult carried out some of the Detailed Route/Road survey needed for the design of the pedestrian walkway. Using a Differential GPS (DGPS), the Controls and survey were executed successfully and the plans needed were prepared accurate for the engineering designs.
