According to Gerhard Schutte, CEO of the Red Meat Producers' Organisation (www.rpo.co.za), only 3.5% of the production is exported compared to 5% before the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease. (Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy), however, points out that the export potential is about 20%. SA produces quality red meat, and our prices are 30% lower than world prices."
