Every year, the same pair of spotted thick-knees returns to my garden.
He was standing right out in the open — so camouflaged I almost missed him entirely.
Then he moved, slowly, toward her under the trees. A flick of the tail — and that’s when I realized there were two.
I have a feeling that’s where they’ll nest. 🌿

I always expect the fynbos to be the star of winter…

But every year, my garden surprises me.

The aloes and pig’s ears burst into flower, and before long the sunbirds arrive for their daily sip of nectar.

One of those simple moments that never gets old. 🌿🐦❤️

This is why winter is one of my favourite seasons at Pezula.

While many gardens slow down during winter, the landscape here seems to come alive.

The proteas are in full bloom, splashing the hillsides with colour, while the fynbos puts on one of its most spectacular displays of the year. From delicate pink flowering fynbos to the rich textures of the Cape Floral Kingdom, every corner seems to celebrate the season.

And it’s not just the flowers enjoying the show. The birdlife is thriving among the blooms, and the resident buck can often be seen wandering through the gardens, quietly grazing and reminding us that nature truly flourishes here.

Winter at Pezula is a season of contrasts — crisp mornings, golden afternoon light, dramatic ocean views and an abundance of life where you might least expect it.

A daily reminder that some of nature’s finest moments happen when the world thinks everything is resting. 🍃✨

With the RHS Chelsea Flower Show about to open again in London, I found myself reflecting on a visit last September to Stanford, where the 2025 gold-winning South African Chelsea Flower Show display was beautifully recreated as part of Stanford in Bloom.

Hearing the story behind the design from Leon Kluge gave deeper meaning to what you’re seeing — a landscape translated into art, shaped by memory, detail, and a deep connection to place.

What makes Stanford so unique is how creativity extends beyond the main installation, with the town itself expressing imagination through floral interpretations and installations that celebrate the spirit of the Cape.

From world-class floral design to local creative expression, everything feels connected by the same thread: nature, identity, and storytelling through landscape.
