There is no such thing called the right time. You must acknowledge that whatever you are planning to do, you have to do it right now. Or else, it will be too late.

If you want to witness success in achieving your plans, you must start right now. Start where you stand and work whatever tools you may have at your command, and better tools will be found as you go along.

Maybe, it will take a bit of time, but the result will be fruitful.

The prime lending rate is now 10.75%

As was predicted by economists, academics and analysts, the SARB has announced a 0.25% interest rate increase. This comes amid high inflationary conditions in South Africa and interest rate hikes are key to containing inflation.

How does it impact a R1 000 000 home loan over a 20-year term at 10.75%?

The new instalment amounts to +/-R10 152.29 p/m. An increase of +/- R168.49 p/m compared to the instalment calculated at 10.50%, the rate announced in November 2022.

The City of Cape Town (COCT) can officially start paying people for the power they sell back to the city. Without limit. National Treasury, giving it the exemption they have asked for. This is an important step on the end loadshedding journey for Cape Town which now aim to immediately rollout the paying of cash for power. Payments to commercial customers will be possible before June, and within the year for any Capetonian with the necessary City-approved generation capacity. If you're thinking of investing in a solar system, it just got more attractive.

COCT aim to buy electricity from as many City supplied customers as are willing to sell to them. These customers may now produce as much power as they can from their approved systems and feed it into Cape Town's grid. Under this plan, COCT will also pay these customers an incentive over and above the NERSA-approved tariff as they help COCT turn the corner on load-shedding.

As COCT’s network of home power producers grows, so will the city's energy security. This has the potential to be a powerful force to end load-shedding over time, together with COCT’s Independent Power Procurement programme, and Power Heroes incentives for voluntary energy savings.

The Day of Reconciliation is a public holiday in South Africa that occurs every December 16th for the purpose of promoting national unity.

In 1995, the Day of Reconciliation was declared a national holiday in South Africa, and December 16th was chosen for its existing significance to those of both African and European descent.

Today, the holiday also marks the beginning of the festive season at the end of the year, including Christmas, the Day of Goodwill, and New Year’s Day. During this period, many businesses close and workers spend time at home with their families or engage in various celebrations.

It is vital – if you made a “capital gain” on the sale of your property (more on how to calculate that below) to understand when you could be liable to pay CGT.

If so, it could well be a substantial liability, and not planning for it will leave you in a world of pain because if you can’t pay your tax bill SARS will be after you with a big stick (SARS has extensive powers when it comes to debt collection).

There is a bit of good news: The advantages of owning your own family home, and the value of property generally as an investment channel, will for most people outweigh the pain of having to pay tax when you eventually sell.

1. To register by the 21 December 2022, the matter must be lodged by the 𝟏 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟐. Matters lodged thereafter may very well register but are not guaranteed to be registered by 21 December 2022.
2. Last day for lodgement: 𝟏𝟐 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟐. This is subject to change and at the discretion of the Registrar of Deeds.
3. Last day for Registration: 𝟐𝟏 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟐.
4. The Deeds Office will re-open on 𝟑 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑.
5. First day for lodgement after re-opening will be 𝟓 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑.
