Homeowners wanting to invest in new solar panels to escape load-shedding will soon benefit from tax breaks.

The finance minister's budget speech specified that individuals who install rooftop solar panels between the dates of 1 March 2023 and 28 February 2024 can claim a rebate of 25% of the cost of the panels, up to a maximum of R15,000. For example, if your solar panels cost of R40 000, your personal income tax liability for the 2023/24 tax year will be reduced by R10 000.

This rebate is available only for new and unused solar photovoltaic (PV) panel installations, not inverters and batteries. To qualify, the solar panels must be purchased and installed at a private home, and a certificate of compliance for the installation must be issued. A valid VAT Invoice Is also required.

Treasury explained in the Budget Review that the 25% tax rebate for households was available only for new and unused solar photovoltaic (PV) panel installations, not inverters and batteries.
