More insights on snares.

Snares are commonly used by poachers to capture wild animals for muti (traditional medicine) or bushmeat, as their use is low-risk for poachers who can set them quickly, limiting the risk of being caught.

Made from wire or cable, attached to a tree in the bush, and characterised by a deadly noose, snares are non-selective weapons that trap and kill or injure any animal that passes through them. This means that, unfortunately, non-target species, such as wild dogs, hyaenas, elephants, rhinos or hippos, are also affected by this threat. The result is injuries, loss of limbs, or death.

Poachers sometimes forget the location of snares that have not caught animals during initial checks, leaving snares in the landscape.

To eliminate the snare threat to our native wildlife, we conduct snare removal operations daily.

Thank you Crime Prevention Unit for having eyes of a hawk, fast detection, removal and reporting.

The Nelspruit Residents and Ratepayers Association is a voluntary non-political association, established on behalf of the Nelspruit residents and ratepayers. It aims to promote and protect the interests of its members. It will maintain close contact with, and hold accountable the local authorities and service providers, particularly on matters where ratepayers and residents are affected.
The current state of the NRRA also necessitates a broader discussion. Our association officially consists of 143 members, yet only 95 are financially up-to-date. This equates to an actual income of less than R20,000.
Despite a strong social media presence, our active, financial membership does not reflect this potentially larger voice. Currently, R10,000 (ten thousand rands) of the total income is on retainer with an attorney committed to our cause. However, once these funds are depleted, our ability to continue our fight is severely limited due to insufficient financial resources. The lack of funds significantly impairs our ability to address key challenges such as student accommodation and rate hike issues.
We urge our community to actively engage and support the NRRA. Whilst your financial contributions are vital, the contribution of your time and expertise, especially in legal, contractual, and municipal affairs, is of even greater importance. Please feel free to reach out to our office via WhatsApp or email if you feel like you are part of the solution. We are a community-driven, community-run association and can only achieve our goals with your involvement – we can only be as effective as our support.

We invite you to join us in this pursuit. Your membership and a nominal fee of 200 Rand will empower us to tackle the pressing issues we face. Let's work together to uphold the values of our community and make a meaningful difference.
