Should you include a home gym in your new home?
It sounds like an easy decision. A dedicated gym is convenient, private and means you don't have to leave home to exercise.
But is it the best use of space for you?
A home gym can be a great investment if fitness is an important part of your lifestyle. Having the equipment ready to use can make exercise easier to fit into your day, and a dedicated space can be designed specifically around how you train.
But there are downsides too.
Gym equipment takes up valuable floor area and a room that gets used for an hour a day may sit empty for the rest of the time. If your priorities change, you could be left with a space that has a very specific purpose.
Thoughtful design can make a difference.
Instead of designing a room that can only ever be a gym, consider creating an adaptable space. With the right proportions, natural light, storage, access and positioning, it could work as a gym today, but later become a study, guest room, hobby room or another living space.
And if you eventually sell the property, flexibility can make the room useful to someone else too.
Good architecture isn't about including everything you could possibly want. It's about making sure the space you invest in works for your life, now and in the future.
