βThe goal of early childhood education should be to activate the childβs own natural desire to learn.β β Maria Montessori
Today we celebrate the birthday of the remarkable Maria Montessori. An Italian physician and educator who developed a unique approach to education. The Montessori method is based on the belief that children learn best by doing, and that they should be given the freedom to explore and learn at their own pace.
One of the key features of the Montessori method is the use of prepared environments, carefully designed to meet the needs of children at different stages of development.
Montessori teachers are trained to observe children and to provide them with the support they need to learn. They do not lecture or give direct instruction, but rather they facilitate learning by providing children with opportunities to explore and experiment.
The Montessori method has been shown to be effective in helping children develop a love of learning, as well as in improving their academic achievement. It is also a great way to help children develop social skills, problem-solving skills, and self-confidence.
My familyβs journey of discovering Montessori education began when my son transitioned from an Afrikaans-only school to an English Montessori environment. The difference was remarkable. He seamlessly adapted and exhibited an extraordinary enthusiasm for learning that I had never seen before. His love for mathematics and his overall zest for acquiring knowledge left me in awe.
Watching my son thrive, I realized that Montessori education was more than just a teaching method; it was a catalyst for a lifelong love of learning. I was on the Montessori band wagon before all this, but having firsthand experience in the results made me realise just how powerful Montessori is.
My daughter's story is equally heartwarming. She struggled with separation anxiety, making it challenging to leave her with anyone but my husband and me. However, the principles embraced by the Montessori school gradually transformed her. The carefully curated environment and the focus on independence and social development nurtured her confidence. Over time, she blossomed into a happy, self-assured little student excited to be at school.
Both my children, each with their unique personalities and challenges, found their place within the Montessori approach. The method's adaptability allowed them to flourish in their own ways.
As we celebrate Maria Montessori's birthday, let's take a moment to honor her legacy. Her pioneering spirit has shaped a method of education that empowers children to become lifelong learners, confident individuals, and compassionate members of society.
Happy Birthday, Maria Montessori.
