Try these tips to help brighten up any room in the house, from basement bedrooms to cramped living quarters.
1. Clean the Windows - this can make a noticeable improvement in the brightness of a room.
2. Use Mirrors Strategically - position mirrors to reflect more light around the house.
3. Rearrange Furniture - change the layout so the sun can really shine in.
4. Streamline Your Shelves - too much on display makes it look like your home is starved for storage space.
5. Cut Back on Clutter - the fewer objects in a room, the airier it will feel.
6. Hang Sheer Window Treatments - sheet curtains let in more light while still offering some privacy.
7. Cut Back Foliage - trim back hedges to restore your view of the outdoors.
8. Choose the Right Fabrics - cotton, linen and lace can help a small room feel more open and bright.
9. Hang Curtains Strategically - extend the rod above and beyond the window frame.
10. Use Natural Materials - focus on jute rugs and light woods, and add plenty of plants.
11. Swap Out Doors - replace solid doors with French doors in rooms that don’t require complete privacy.
12. Lighten Up Floors - lay lighter area rugs over a darker floor to set a brighter palette.
13. Layer Your Lighting - use multiple light sources, like accent lamps or task lighting.
14. Scale Down Furniture - low tables made of materials like glass and acrylic make a space feel roomier.
15. Check Light Bulb Labels - cool light makes a room look whiter and brighter.
16. Use Dimmer Switches - put primary light sources on dimmer switches so you can brighten a room as the light changes throughout the day.
17. Don’t Forget Utility Spaces - use solutions like undercabinet lighting or spotlights to illuminate your scullery.
18. Be a Minimalist on the Walls - choose a few pieces of art and make sure there’s plenty of space around each one to make the walls feel more expansive.
19. Raise the Ceiling Height - incorporate vertical lines into your room design.
20. Carve Out Hidden Storage Space - use dual-purpose pieces like storage ottomans or benches.
21. Use Paint to Your Advantage - nothing will brighten up a room as quickly as painting it in a light, neutral colour palette.

Interior decorating comes down to personal taste, budget and space. However, a few decorating ‘rules’ are good to keep in mind. Here are nine you need to know:

1. Do the measurements
It may seem like a no-brainer, but measuring your home before purchasing new furniture is a crucial first step to a successful design. Measure the desired item and mark the outline on the floor with masking tape.

2. Use colour psychology
Colour is highly emotive, so it affects your thinking and behaviour. Red is impactful and energising – a good choice for a dining room where you want to stimulate conversation and appetite. Blue is a cooling colour with an excellent calming effect on the body and mind. Choose this for a bedroom or living room.

3. Maximise lighting
Layer the lighting by including pendant lights, chandeliers and trendy wall sconces. This helps to soften the lighting, create calmness and enhance the ambience.

4. Extend your curtains
Your curtains should always meet the floor. Curtains that are too short make the room look unfinished.

5. Invest in a hero rug
A rug that’s too small can throw off an entire room so if you can’t afford a decent size, rather opt out of a rug completely.

6. Go for timelessness
When redoing countertops, cabinets and built-in furniture, it’s best to go for timeless styles and colours. Incorporate bold trends through accessories and small pieces of furniture.

7. Mix and match
Mix your pieces and buy different items that work together. It will give your house more of a story and plenty of interest.

8. Leave enough space
Having enough space to move through your home is important to the overall flow of the design. You don’t want to feel cramped and claustrophobic in it.

9. Think about art
Be careful not to hang artwork too high as this can make a room feel awkward. Art always looks best at eye level, so aim for this whenever possible.

Here are a few tips you should know before you paint to make your job easier:

1. Prepping a room does make a difference
It’s pretty obvious that painting is much easier (and quicker) when there is nothing in your way. This means emptying out the room as much as possible.

2. Test the paint colour
Test as many samples as you like until you’ve found the perfect colour. While the paint is drying, observe how the colour looks throughout different periods of the day and at night. This will give you a good idea of what the colour will really look like on your walls.

3. Allow a little colour into your home
The days of beige, off-white and grey are over. Experiment to see what unique colours work for your home.

4. Pay attention to the finish you choose
In most instances, an eggshell finish is the best option. It provides some gloss, is still easy to clean, does not highlight imperfections and is not as prone to damage as matt paint.

5. Determine how much paint you need
To help you get an accurate estimate, you can use an online paint calculator.

6. Priming saves on paint
Always try to prime before you paint. It guarantees a great finish and you use less paint.

7. Brush before rolling
Carefully use a high-quality brush to paint areas that a roller cannot reach. Use the roller after brushing in order to flatten out any brush marks.

8. Prep your roller and paint brushes
Remove any loose fibres from the roller and paint brushes.

9. Gather the proper supplies
Don’t skimp on supplies. Make sure you have rollers, brushes, masking tape, paint trays and a step ladder.

10. Paint can be changed
Don’t stress, your paint colour can always be changed.
