Hidden within the grand walls of KWV's La Concorde building in Paarl lie many rooms with many stories to tell. Few buildings have a room as legendary as this one…
The Roodeberg Room is a living tribute to one of South Africa's most legendary wines and the brilliant mind behind it: Dr Charles Niehaus.
In 1949, this pioneering master blender created something so extraordinary that it was kept almost entirely out of reach for locals, a secret, full-bodied red blend made exclusively for the export market.
But secrets have a way of getting out.
Word spread, demand grew, and Roodeberg took on an almost mythical status. So scarce was a bottle that South Africans would trade concert tickets, favours, and connections just to get their hands on one. The ultimate barter wine.
When KWV established its iconic La Concorde headquarters, certain stories deserved more than a footnote. The Roodeberg Room was born, a curated space where rare historical vintages share walls with priceless South African artwork, and a magnificent yellowwood table that seats 24 at its heart.
Preservation is one of our key pillars in maintaining an extraordinary asset like KWV La Concorde. Over seven decades on, the legend hasn't faded. It's aged beautifully.
