There are just a few days until this year’s Hill’s 1000 Paws Walk, which takes place on Sunday 12 June at Highgate Wine Estate, next to Piggly Wiggly on the R103 outside Howick.
With the lifting of lockdown restrictions that were in place last year, this year’s event will see a return to the usual fun-filled family day that includes arena pet-and-owner competitions, a seated tea tent serving refreshments, various stalls, a kiddies’ playground, live music, and lots of lucky draws and prizes, in addition to the walks. This year, the walks are being labelled as the shorter “Puppies and Pensioners” walk and a longer, more challenging route with a steep hill climb - the “Adults and Athletes” walk.
Some tips to make this a happy day for you and your pooch:
* It is vital to ensure that your pet will have a fun time. Unfit, elderly, unsociable and nervous dogs will not enjoy themselves - rather come along on your own and tell them all about it later at home!
* Your dog is walking in a fur coat - make sure that they have plenty of water and are allowed to stop and drink (and paddle!) at the many water stations along the way.
* Make sure that your dog’s harness or collar and lead (no choke chains please!) fit comfortably and securely - we don’t want dogs on the loose being chased by their panicking owners!
* Vital for humans - comfortable walking shoes/boots, a hat or cap, sunblock and some spending money. Entry is R40 per adult, R10 per dog, with free entry for children under twelve.
The programme for the day is:
8:00 Walks open
8:30 Khazimula Marimba Band performance
9:00 Dog and owner look-a-like competition
