The Port Elizabeth Main Public Library on Market Square is an architectural masterpiece. The building was opened in 1902 (even though the date on it says 1901), and its beautiful terracotta façade was produced in England and shipped down to Algoa Bay in numbered blocks. In front of the library is a statue of Queen Victoria, unveiled in 1903 and made of Sicilian marble.
