One consumer trend in the hybrid workplace in 2022, is the rise of podcasts as a tool to allow people to consume audio content while working. Podcast audio content gives listeners the ability to dive into topics without having to set aside time to read or watch a video.

Here at Haaks, we value podcasts based on its educational component at low cost and of course the convenience of informing oneself on a relevant topic at any time.

If you’re interested in upskilling yourself in the field of construction, whether it’s running your own construction entity, tips and tricks of a specific trade, construction law or expanding your business through construction tech (on an international level), here are some industry-related podcasts you have to listen to:

- The Building Code

- The Modern Crafts Man

- The Lien Zone

- The Art of Construction

- Con Tech Crew

- The Fine Homebuilding Podcast

- Protractor Podcast

- Construction Industry Podcast

This week, we would like to highlight Digital Builder, a podcast made by those at the forefront of construction technology, aimed at discussing topics centered around where the construction industry is headed on the international front, specifically in the US.

The effects of load shedding on your business

South Africa is in its first week of load shedding for 2022. It’s safe to say that no business can longer afford to go without an alternative source of electricity.

Its effects include, but are not limited to:

- A loss in productivity
- A loss of profit
- An increased risk of theft or burglary
- Damage to electronics

In the construction industry, the highest risks during load shedding include:

- Completion of the project within the allocated time period (within the budgeted cost)
- The implication of time lost during load shedding such as: Penalties for late completion and late acquirement, thus lost income.
- Health and safety risks during a project with no electricity.
- Machine control difficulties.
- Manufacturing of building materials.

What are some of the knock-on effects you have experienced in your construction-related job, due to load shedding?

Is your company making any provisions with regards to timelines or claims for load shedding during projects?
