Saint Helena Bay (Afrikaans: Sinthelenabaai)
The quaint coastal town of St
Helena Bay on the South African West Coast has a Mediterranean climate, making it an excellent winter destination. Saint Helena Bay is the only area along the West Coast where the sun rises and sets across the bay. The reason for this is its unique location, where by the town itself faces north east and almost north. This 31km stretch of pristine coastline boasts 18 bays, and its sandy white beaches are perfect for beachcombing, and even a refreshing dip in the Atlantic. Water sports such as boardsailing, windsurfing, sea kayaking, diving and angling, are popular attractions throughout the region. There is an abundance of seafood available at the local restaurants, and the harbour is a vibrant, bustling hive of activity, as the fish are sold straight off the boats. St Helena Bay is one of the most popular bays for whales to mate and calve. From August to November, they can be viewed from the shore all around the bay. Humpback and killer whales are also present in the area, amongst other cetacean species. St Helena Bay is also home to the endemic Heaviside's dolphin. Large groups can be seen chasing fish along the coast, or flying majestically through the air and back into the ocean, out of pure enjoyment. It is also the southernmost point for the Palearctic migratory birds from northern Europe and Siberia, making it a bird-watcher's paradise. During Spring, the region boasts with its magnificent spread of wild flowers throughout August and September. And all this only 90 minutes away from Cape Town!
