Our boy Blue #82! We adopted this beautiful male Cape vulture (Gyps coprotheres) YB82, from VulPro for educational purposes, and although he doesn’t live at our centre, we sponsor his feeding.
Blue was sadly a statistic in a poisoning incident in 2013. He was rehabilitated at Moholoholo Wildlife and Rehabilitation Center NPC, but could not be released having spent too long in captivity and because his eyesight was poor. He was then housed at the MonteCasino Bird Gardens, but when he started displaying mating behaviour he was sent to Vulpro to breed. Blue now forms a valuable part of Vulpro’s Cape Vulture captive breeding programme. He is YB90’s partner and together they are parents of nest #7. They have successfully produced offspring which have been released contributing to wild vulture populations.
Today is National Endangered Species Day! It is important that we are educated on ways in which to conserve these magnificent birds and how we can assist the organizations that are working toward saving them.
