Hi everyone - a friendly heads-up from the team at Garden Route Lifestyle Property.
Please note: This is not an official warning. We are simply sharing some practical suggestions with our clients ahead of forecast weather. For official warnings and updates, please follow the South African Weather Service at www.weathersa.co.za and your local municipality.
The South African Weather Service has issued warnings for significant rainfall and strong winds across the Garden Route over the coming days. Our message is simple: be prepared and stay calm. The Garden Route is no stranger to big weather, and a little preparation now goes a long way.
Please follow official updates only. SAWS and your local municipality are the authoritative sources. Be cautious about information circulating on social media or WhatsApp. In storm events, misinformation spreads fast and causes unnecessary panic.
Avoid unnecessary travel. Flooded roads are far more dangerous than they look. Water depth is deceptive, and conditions can change quickly. If you don't need to be on the roads, stay home.
While conditions are still dry, take a walk around your property. We've spent decades in the Garden Route and these are the things that matter:
Gutters: clear them out. A blocked gutter in sustained rain will push water into your ceiling or run down interior walls before you know it. Check how water drains away from your home. Leaf litter, soil that has built up around doorsteps, anything sitting in a drainage line: clear it now.
Any doorway, garage or low-lying area that has taken water before: get sandbags or a barrier ready before the rain arrives.
Have a look at your roof if you can do so safely. Lifted sheets, loose ridge caps, anything that has been on the to-do list: a south-easter won't give it a second chance.
Bring everything inside that the wind can move. Garden furniture, pot plants, loose tools, gas bottles: in strong gusts these become projectiles.
That overhanging branch near the house? Now's the time. A branch through a window at 2am is a bad night for everyone.
Prepare for power outages. Charge your devices, have torches and a power bank ready, and make sure your gas bottle is full so you can cook and boil water without electricity.
If there is a maintenance issue at your property, a leaking roof, a blocked drain, anything that could get worse in wet weather, please don't sit on it. Reach out and we'll help where we can.
Stay prepared, stay calm, follow official sources, and look after yourselves and your neighbours.
Stay safe and dry, the GRLP team. Stay safe and dry,
