𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝗸
We were required to do a lidar scan for a local site surveyor owned by the City of Cape Town.

We were required to capture all the tree locations on a 7-hectare property to get their positions. This establishes how many trees there are and for future planning on the property for further development.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀
We used the 𝗙𝗝𝗗 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝟭 scanner with a camera for Point Cloud colourisation and the 𝗘𝗺𝗹𝗶𝗱 𝗥𝗦𝟮 connected to 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝘁 to get RTK corrections for the Ground Control.

The total time to scan the site and establish Ground Control took six (6) hours, or approximately one hectare per hour.

After the scan, we processed the data using the Trion model software, utilising the forestry parameters. We can edit segmentation results from the software to extract tree location, height, and crown width and batch-extract attributes to create reports that provide valuable forest surveys, management, and planning insights.

Due to the large size of the Point Cloud, which was hundreds of millions of points, it took almost four (4) days to process successfully.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲
Overall, the surveyor was highly impressed, as previously he would take several days to a few weeks to do a tree count using a total station to measure all the trees.

The scan also provides additional benefits by recording other assets and building positions during the process.

After much research with various commercial sonar devices, which are extremely expensive: i.e., to import a complete unit catamaran or boat, you can expect to pay upwards of R1m, we designed a fit-for-purpose drone boat that from prototype to our latest MK2 and popular MK1, both deliver excellent results. We have seen results within 1% of the design and an accuracy of 1cm to 2cm.

The Aquadrone sends a continuous signal, the intensity and swath of which differs with seven-degree returns high-resolution, whereas the 47-degree returns a much broader swath with bottom returns of less detail.

We program the boat to do autonomous missions of the desired area to be mapped and measured. It has functionality for the operator to take control and manually manoeuvre the boat to avoid obstacles.

𝗪𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘆.

We process the imagery with Pix4D to get a digital elevation model (DEM) and take the DEM into model maker and merge it with the Aquadrone data to continue the contours and elevations underwater.

We can use this data to get the following outputs:
