How to get rid of cockroaches

Cockroaches have been the bane of many a homeowner’s life for centuries. As masters of their craft, they excel at sending shivers down your spine and are one of the hardest pests to get rid of. Most homeowners and exterminators struggle to get rid of these little critters as they can survive under the harshest conditions.

The presence of cockroaches in your home can pose a serious health risk to you and your family. Cockroaches are known to carry a large number of serious diseases. It has been established that the presence of cockroaches in your home may induce asthma. Additionally, cockroach waste may cause eczema or an allergic reaction in some people.

We offer some top tips on controlling these pests below.

Find out where cockroaches are coming from
Cockroaches are nocturnal, meaning that they are active during the night time in search of food. You might need to do a little sleuthing to find the source of your infestation. Generally cockroaches hide in cracks and crevices around your house. They enter through drains or vents, preferring warm, humid areas such as kitchens as their prime infestation spot.

Sealing
Sealing cracks, skirting boards and any other points cockroaches use to gain access will assist in getting rid of them.

Deny access to food and water
The most effective way to exercise cockroach control is to prevent them from accessing food and water. Be sure to store food in sealed containers or in sealed plastic bags and clean food debris from under fridges and stoves. Do not leave liquids standing overnight.

Keep your kitchen clean
Clean all food waste and spillages immediately and keep refuse in a sealed bin. Be sure to disinfect kitchen surfaces as cockroaches are attracted to dirt and grime.

Just a little Thursday morning humour - I'd like to be twelve

A man sat on the edge of the bed, observing his wife as she got ready for work. Since her birthday was not far off, he asked her what she'd like.

"I'd like to be twelve again," she replied, looking in the mirror.

On the morning of her birthday, he woke up early, made her a big bowl of Coco Pops and then took her to the theme park.

What a day! He put her on every ride in the park - the Death Slide, the Corkscrew, the Wall of Fear, the Screaming Monster. Five hours later, they staggered out of the theme park. Her head was reeling.

He took her to McDonald's and ordered her a Happy Meal with extra fries and a chocolate milkshake. Then it was off to the movies with popcorn, a huge soda and her favourite sweets. What a fabulous adventure! Finally, they went home and she collapsed onto the bed, exhausted.

The husband leaned over her with a big smile and asked, "Well dear, what was it like being twelve again?"

Her eyes opened slowly and her expression changed. "I meant my dress size!"

The moral of the story: Even when a man is listening, he is going to get it wrong.

How to spot a growth area when buying a home

Analyse the rental market
Analysing the rental market in a given area is easier said than done, but it can provide a fairly clear indication of whether or not an area is poised for growth. It’s a lot of work, but it’s a real financial indicator – and if you’re lucky, an estate agent might do a similar calculation on your behalf.

Recognise gentrification
Gentrification is the refurbishing of a given neighbourhood to middle or upper-middle class standards. A newly gentrified area, or one about to go through the process, is typically poised to become more attractive to shops, restaurants and real estate developers – which is to say it’s ripe for investment.

Note infrastructure & public transportation changes
If there are notable infrastructure and public transportation changes happening in an area, there’s a chance that it is soon to be a focal point for investors and business activity. Simply put, if a city is making it easier to get to there and more pleasant to stay there, the goal is typically to attract business.

Keep an eye out for new entertainment
New entertainment springing up in an area can attract residents and can certainly make an existing property more valuable. Sometimes this is something as simple as a new movie theatre or a trendy bar.

While there’s plenty about a neighbourhood that might indicate your property will ultimately be more valuable, this will also depend on what you do to enhance the property itself. As you analyse an area, keep in mind efforts you might make personally to enhance the property over time.
