Soundproof Your Home

Modern living means that many homeowners reside in townhouse developments, apartment buildings or flats where they are bombarded by noise from neighbours. Here are tips to soundproof to your home:

1. Let textiles do the work
If you are looking at flooring options for your new home and worried about noise levels from neighbours, you should definitely consider carpets. Also, look at the options for under-carpet insulation, as this can help reduce noise levels.
If there is one room in a home that needs soundproofing, it’s the bedroom. This is your haven and you want the bedroom to be peaceful and quiet. A carpet in the bedroom will definitely reduce noise levels.

2. Insulate your home
Insulating the structure of your home can reduce noise levels substantially. Take a closer look at your doors and windows to check for gaps around the frames or at the bottom of your doors. Use foam insulation tape and a draught-excluder to insulate your home from sound.

3. Choose upholstered furniture
You can improve soundproofing by choosing the right type of furniture. Upholstered furniture acts as a natural insulator that can soften outdoor noise. Select an over-stuffed sofa or fully upholstered sectional suite as the main seating element in your living area, then build up layers of soundproofing with cushions, rugs and even textile wall hangings. Anything upholstered will absorb noise.
In the bedroom, install an upholstered headboard to assist in noise dampening and keep the bedroom insulated and peaceful. If there is enough room, think about an upholstered ottoman for the end of the bed. All of these elements absorb noise and work towards a more comfortable bedroom.

Just a little Thursday morning humour - At the Scene of the Accident

Attorney: "At the scene of the accident, you told the policeman that you had never felt better in your life."

Farmer: "That's correct."

Attorney: "How is it that you are now claiming you were seriously injured when my client's car crashed into you?"

Farmer: "Well, when the policeman arrived, he went over to my donkey, who had a broken leg, and put him down. Then he went over to my dog Champ, who was all banged up, and put him down."

"So when he asked me how I felt, I thought that, under the circumstances, 'Never better' was a wise response."

Holiday Security Tips

With the holidays fast approaching, many of us are taking time off to visit family members who live far away or to soak up the sun at one of South Africa’s famous holiday destinations.

Here are some simple but highly effective tips for home safety while you're away:

Test your system before leaving - Rather than testing your alarm or security system the day before you leave, test it at least a week in advance. This will give you ample time to fix any problems. Alert your security company to problems that you cannot rectify on your own.

Perimeter check - Again, this should be done well in advance in order to give you time to rectify any issues. Take a walk around the perimeter of your property and check if any fences, barriers or security cameras are broken or malfunctioning.
Trim the foliage - If you have an electric fence, it is vital to cut back any foliage or tree branches that may be hanging onto or over it, as these could result in a false alarm to your security company and an annoying phone call to you while you are on holiday. Trimming bushes and branches will also reduce the hiding space for intruders.

Collect your post - Ask a neighbour or friend to collect your post as a cluttered post box is a clear sign to criminals that nobody is home.

Neighbourly help - Offer your driveway to your neighbour's holiday visitors. This regular activity could imply that someone is at home, which will deter criminals.
