THE WORLD OF THE EARLY RISER

There is a sliver of time between the night and the coming day when the house belongs entirely to whoever is first to rise.

In this particular stillness, the day introduces itself through solitary rituals. A kettle switched on in a quiet kitchen. A window cracked open to let the garden in - the pleasant cold air on your face, the smell of damp earth and something wonderfully fresh.

At Le Grand Jardin Villa, there is a deep contentment in this watchful silence. You wander from room to room, acquainting yourself with the house's character at your own unhurried pace, lazily browsing the shelves, puffing up a cushion before settling in to gaze out across the mist-softened garden. The world is yours, and you are in no hurry to share it.

Your vigil ends when you hear footsteps on the stairs.

In our villa, the bathtubs deserve their own consideration: copper, solid jade, and one the precise yellow of the Beatles' submarine.

Fill the tub, open your book, pour the wine and realise, somewhere between the second chapter and the second glass, that there is absolutely nowhere else you need to be.

That is the ritual. We recommend it highly.

THE STELLENBOSCH ART MILE

Stellenbosch is no less beautiful in winter. The oak trees lose their leaves and something opens up - a haunting grace that makes you want to pull on your warmest coat and take to the streets. One street in particular: Die Laan.

Skirting the Eerste Rivier (First River) this is the home of the Stellenbosch Art Mile, a living gallery set in nature, where interactive installations change with the seasons and reward slow, unhurried attention. Stellenbosch being Stellenbosch, you will never be far from a steaming flat white to clasp between cold hands.

When you've looked your fill and watched the river trip its way over boulders, drive back through Devon Valley - home to a fire that's already lit, and a house warm and waiting.

There is something about a harvest table in autumn that just feels right.

Our ideal charcuterie board includes whatever can be scrounged from the pantry: homemade preserves and sticky syrups, cantaloupe, bunches of grapes, prosciutto, wedges of Brie and Chèvre, all arranged beautifully beside an open bottle of Le Grand Domaine red. The start of the evening's feast...

At Le Grand Jardin Villa, mealtimes are a time to gather, share and savour, both the food and the company of those who matter most to us.

Simply ask your villa host, the lovely Shani, to arrange a private chef for the duration of your stay, someone who understands that the best meals are the ones that feel like they happened by beautiful accident.
