Getting to Know Strand – Let’s Start at the Beginning
One thing about me as a real estate agent — when I move to a new area, I don’t just sell houses… I learn the place.
Since relocating to Strand, I’ve been doing what I always do: walking the streets, talking to locals, reading up, and understanding the roots of the town I’ll be working in. Because to truly advise buyers and sellers, you need to know more than just prices — you need to know the story.
So let’s start where Strand started 👇
Strand’s history goes all the way back to the late 1600s, when it began as a simple fishing spot thanks to the abundance of fish along the northern shores of False Bay. One of the earliest recorded European settlers was a Dutch East India Company corporal named Muller in the 1690s.
In 1714, a Huguenot settler, David du Buisson, was granted a farm called Vlooibaai — land that today forms the business heart of Strand. Over time, the area became known as Mostert’s Bay, and later Somerset West Strand, as farmers from Stellenbosch began using it as a summer holiday retreat in the early 1800s.
Strand’s appeal hasn’t changed much since then:
🏖️ A 5km stretch of white sandy beach
🌊 Safe swimming
🏄 Popular with families, sunbathers and surfers
As the town grew, key developments shaped what we know today:
• 1897 – Strand became an official municipality
• 1902 – The de Beers Dynamite Factory opened, boosting local growth
• 1904 – The first wooden pavilion was built
• 1934 – The iconic Strand Jetty was constructed
• 1937 – The town was officially named Strand
This is only the beginning.
Over time, I’ll be sharing more insights about Strand — its suburbs, property trends, lifestyle perks and what makes different areas tick.
If you live here, grew up here, or are considering a move — stick around. I’m here to learn, share, and help you make informed property decisions.
