The details you touch deserve as much thought as the ones you see.

At reception, a speckled, stone-textured counter meets a clear acrylic panel held on brushed brass fixings, with the Michelangelo wave traced in brass. Trailing greenery spills over the edge and brings the desk to life.

Brass, stone and greenery: a trio that will still feel right in ten years' time. Warm metal fittings are having a real moment, and pairing them with tactile surfaces keeps the look timeless.

Sometimes the loveliest view of a room is the one it hands back to you.

Standing here you catch the whole space at once. The mural, the warm halo behind every mirror, the oak shelves curving with the wall, a client mid appointment in the far corner. That is the part people underestimate about mirrors. They are not only for checking your fringe, they double the light, stretch the plan and let a compact room breathe.

The fine details are what make a space live effortlessly, and the final 5% breathes the life into it.

First impressions live in the first two metres.

Everything at this entrance is doing a job. The speckled terrazzo counter holds up to a busy day, the brushed gold fixings and the acrylic sign carry the brand without a single loud colour, and the glass pendant keeps the sightline open so you can see straight through to the mural and the mirrors beyond. Then there is the small break sign on the glass, which tells you exactly what kind of people work here.

Warm, considered, a little bit playful. Thought through, planned, perfectly executed.

A salon has about four seconds to tell you how it is going to make you feel.

So we gave this one a wall worth sitting in front of. The Creation of Adam runs the full length of the room in soft plaster tones, and the mirrors are cut straight into the story rather than hung over it. Backlit edges keep the glow flattering instead of clinical, the oak shelving carries the product range without shouting, and the greenery softens every hard line in the space.

The rooms that stop you in your tracks are never the ones that look like a showroom.

Light is a material. I treat it like one.

This piece is the reason a hallway stops feeling like a corridor. Hand formed glass with all its ripples and imperfections left in, a brushed brass disc floating off centre, and a slim stem holding the whole thing in balance. Switched off it reads as sculpture. Switched on it throws a soft halo onto the wall behind it and the room changes character completely.

No fads, no shortcuts, just proportion, light and honest materials.

Hold the palette steady, keep the materials honest, let proportion do the quiet work, and you earn the right to one loud gesture. Spend your boldness in every corner and nothing in the building reads as bold at all.

Here the whole budget of noise went on one framed bird, orange on pink, in an arch kept deliberately plain around her. One wall does the shouting. Everything else gets to breathe.

Showrooms are full of rooms where every single thing is the hero. Those are never the rooms anybody remembers.

Nobody walks through an arch the way they walk through a door.

A square opening tells you to get on with it. A curve pulls your eye down the sides and hands you the room in pieces. A chair first, then the light, then the whole of it. You arrive twice, and it is the second arrival people remember.

That is the part of this work that still gets me after all these years. We are not choosing pretty things. We are deciding where somebody slows down, where they pause, and what they feel when they turn a corner.

The plan settles all of that long before a single piece of furniture shows up.

Almost every woman has a mirror in her life that she hates standing in front of. Nine times out of ten the problem is the lighting, not the woman.

I have never understood why the places we go to feel better about ourselves are so often lit like a filing office. Warm glass, hung low and uneven, does the opposite. It takes the edge off a face and off a whole day.

Choose your light the way you choose your company. You live under it far longer than you think.

Vrou is one of the most ordinary words in Afrikaans. It is also one of the heaviest.

She carries the house, the diaries, everybody else's hard week. Then she finally books an hour for herself and spends the first ten minutes of it apologising for taking it.

So the room had to speak before anyone at the counter did. Come in. Sit down. Nothing is required of you here.

A name on a wall is a promise. This one was worth getting right.

The build ends, the paint dries, and then comes the part Soekie loves most: the final five percent that breathes the life into a space. A clock in warm gold, a fern spilling off its shelf, one cheeky stripe of red waiting on the wood. Nothing here shouts. Everything here belongs.
