Right okes… you know those 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 “𝗯𝗼𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘆” 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼𝘀 where it looks like someone emptied a dealership into the ocean?
Twenty centre consoles tied together.
Four 300hp Mercury Racing motors on each one.
Music so loud the dolphins apply for earplugs.
Ja… that vibe.
Well guess what?
We’ve got our own version.
And no, it’s not 50-foot centre consoles with quad outboards hanging off the back like a porcupine on steroids.
It’s better.
It’s local.
It’s lekker.
It’s ours.
It’s called Vaal River Rats South Africa and if you haven’t heard of it, you’ve either been living under a rock… or stuck at home because your trailer bearings packed up.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗮𝗮𝗹’𝘀 𝗢𝘄𝗻 “𝗕𝗼𝗮𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘆”
So here’s the story.
Vaal River Rats SA officially kicked off in 2015 but locals will tell you this thing has been brewing for years before that.
The whole idea?
Bring the boating community together in a way that’s never been done before.
On the water.
With your boat.
With your people.
No pretence. No nonsense.
Their very first gathering?
Around 𝟭𝟮𝟬 𝗯𝗼𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝟮,𝟱𝟬𝟬 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲.
Let that sink in.
That’s not a braai.
That’s a floating festival.
And since then?
It’s grown into a full-blown movement along the mighty Vaal River.
And here’s the part I respect:
They’re big on protecting our waterways.
It’s not just about jol and jetskis.
It’s about looking after the river so our kids can still ski, surf, and fish there one day.
𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝘀 𝗮 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗢𝗻𝗲
This Saturday, 21 February 2026, from 12:00 – 18:00, is their 20th gathering.
Twenty.
That’s not a once-off hype event.
That’s legacy.
And if you think it’s just boats parked next to each other… think again.
It’s families.
It’s watersports.
It’s ski ropes flying.
It’s music drifting over the water.
It’s tannies judging your docking skills from 40 metres away.
It’s ouens comparing horsepower like it’s a personality trait.
South Africa is hands down one of the best family countries for this kind of thing.
We’ve got the weather.
We’ve got the water.
We’ve got the gees.
𝗕𝗨𝗧… 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗜𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴
Now here’s the serious bit.
You can’t just pitch up like you’re arriving at a Spur parking lot.
All skippers, and I repeat... ALL skippers:
Make sure your paperwork is in order and ON the boat.
Checklist:
• Skipper’s licence
• COF certificate
• Buoyancy certificate
• All required SAMSA safety equipment
• NO child without adult supervision or a life jacket
• You are responsible for your boat and your people
• No alcohol to be sold or distributed
• NO glass bottles
• TRASH stays in your boat
They’ll be assisting Waterwing police by monitoring and reporting any nonsense.
𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:
Don’t be that oke...
Don’t be the reason everyone’s day gets ruined.
We’re there to have fun... not to make the news.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁
Look… we might not have 6x 300hp racing outboards per boat like the Americans.
But that’s not what this is about.
It’s about:
• Community
• Watersports
• Families
• Protecting our river
• Showing that South Africans can actually gather in big numbers and not act like hooligans
That’s powerful.
𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗨𝘀?
We’re super keen.
We’ll be there again this year.
So if you see a certain MasterCraft cruising past…
wink wink nudge nudge.
𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝗲...
Are you going?
Have you ever been?
Or are you that oke who’s been meaning to go for 5 years but your boat is “almost ready”?
