Handing over the keys early used to be a friendly gesture. Today it can leave you legally exposed.

If a deal collapses after your buyer has moved in - a revoked bond, a linked sale that falls through - you could be left with an unlawful occupier you can't simply remove. Under the PIE Act, a civil eviction can run four to twelve months and cost thousands in legal fees. Until the Registrar of Deeds signs off, you're still the legal owner, and the risk is still yours.
