Kigumi (木組み) is the ancient Japanese technique of wood joinery that has sustained physical structures for centuries. Interlocking wooden pieces are put together without nails and assembled with such precision that no metal fasteners are needed.

At Wedyan, every residence features a uniquely crafted kigumi-inspired cellar, where furniture becomes architecture, and every detail reflects our commitment to timeless craft.

Just as Kengo Kuma sees no boundaries between architecture and interiors, this wooden lattice cellar becomes a natural extension of Wedyan's design language: a custodian of tradition reinterpreted for contemporary life.

A Pool or Pavilion?

In recent times, residential towers with swimming pools on balconies became the symbol of the address. Kengo Kuma offers a different perspective at Wedyan: “Perhaps a space for meditation would actually be the more meaningful alternative.”

He believes the real definition of luxury is the capacity to pursue depth of mind, not the accumulation of features, but the quality of the moments a home makes possible.

At Wedyan, the teahouse-inspired pavilion on select terraces is that answer.

Inspired by the Japanese concept of Guru Guru (ぐるぐる) - the whirling, curvilinear fluidity like a watermill, Wedyan's expressive architecture, with its cascading terraces, creates a diverse organic rhythm throughout the tower: a kinetic and dynamic perception, always changing between day and night, pulsating with life and energy.

Wedyan - The Canal is not a tower with landscape added, but a building where landscape is the structure itself - as profiled by Landscape Middle East Magazine in its recent issue.

Rising 46 storeys along the Dubai Canal, Wedyan is the debut project of Al Ghurair Collection. KENGO KUMA & ASSOCIATES led the architecture; Gustafson Porter + Bowman brought in the landscape. The two were never designed in isolation. Every terrace, planted area and amenity was developed in parallel with the architectural vision, with over 30 specialists engaged from the outset. That early coordination is what makes the landscape function rather than decorate.

At Wedyan, Kengo Kuma applied the Japanese design philosophy of Suke Suke (すけすけ), defining a layered space where "transparency" emerges from the horizontal plane itself.

He draws on the concept of 'affordance', developed by James J. Gibson in The Ecological Approach to Visual Perception (1979), which says: we do not perceive objects solely as pure forms, but also through the use we can make of them and the meaning we bring to them.

Space, therefore, is perceived through position, material, light, and texture. It can be interpreted through flat surfaces that create a strong link with the landscape outside, evoking the sensation of being part of nature itself.

At Wedyan, this concept of Suke Suke (すけすけ) echoes throughout the tower, where horizontal layers create a cascading fluidity, and refined edges shape flowing terrace lines, merging texture and greenery in harmony with nature.

Kengo Kuma describes Wedyan as a conversation between land and water, imagining "mountains slowly stepping down into the sea".

The curves of Wedyan descend in layers until the tower seems to dissolve into the canal-front promenade itself. The sandy textured façade, the cascading planting, the way the lower terrace canopies lie almost as if floating over the water, all of it is that conversation made physical.

Sultan Al Ghurair frames the same philosophy in his own vision: a building that listens to the environment around it. One that doesn't simply occupy a site, but belongs to it.

One of Wedyan's defining design features is the seamless flow between indoor and outdoor living. Kengo Kuma dissolves the boundary between interior sanctuary and exterior sky gardens, where living spaces transition effortlessly onto a private terrace of desert-tolerant planting, with views of the canal or the city unfolding beyond. Stone, light and greenery move as one continuous palette with travertine floors flowing outward to sculpted planters, shade and bloom.
