How did an old lady beat me running across 21 km’s?!…

A lesson I learnt during this race - slow and steady always wins the race.

I was running between 6-7 min pace. When my knee started to ache, I would walk to rest it for a few metres and then start running again.

There was this old lady who was probably in her 60’s or 70’s, running at a 7.50-8 min pace (maybe slower). It looked like a slow jog or a speed walk.

We kept passing each other, overtaking one another until the 15th or 16th kilometre, she passed me for the last time and I never seen her again.

As she passed she said “it’s like the hare and the tortoise”. I thought to myself (cheekily) “sure”… boy was she right!

It really solidified that, when going the distance, a slow, steady and consistent pace will always outperform a fast and eager rush to the finish line.

I learnt a lesson. This translates into so many areas of life. Everyone these days is rushing to get to the finish line, the next car, the next house, the next designer bag.

But the real ones aren’t seen in the flashy cars or designer clothes. The real ones aren’t at the pub at 3pm on a Friday. They’re quietly and consistently building, day-by-day, brick by brick.

I look back on the last 5 years, I can appreciate the distance I’ve travelled but can’t help but think - am I still in a rush? Do I need to be more patient, with life but also with myself and others? Will I get to my destination by being a short-of-breath mess or, will I arrive with grace, wisdom and finesse?

One things is for sure - with age comes wisdom and I’ve never been the one to turn down an opportunity to grow. Whoever you are old lady, I appreciate you whooping my butt. I will catch you on the next one!
