Elizabeth St has an underground creek originally known as Williams Creek before it was paved over and piped post 1840, Melbourne (1840s)

Beneath the busy streets of modern Elizabeth Street lies a fascinating piece of Melbourne’s natural history: a watercourse once known as Williams Creek. Before the city expanded across the area, the creek formed part of the natural drainage system of the young settlement. As Melbourne grew during the nineteenth century, the waterway increasingly became an obstacle to urban development and sanitation. From the 1840s onward, sections of the creek were progressively altered, covered, and eventually incorporated into underground drainage infrastructure. The transformation reflects the rapid growth of Melbourne from a small colonial settlement into a major city. What is now a busy commercial street therefore conceals a landscape that once looked completely different. Urban streams across nineteenth-century Melbourne were frequently modified as authorities attempted to improve roads, drainage, and public health. The story of Williams Creek demonstrates how much of the original natural landscape has disappeared beneath Melbourne’s built environment. Walking along Elizabeth Street today, it is remarkable to think that water once flowed beneath or through parts of the area. This hidden creek is a fascinating reminder that Melbourne’s history exists not only in its buildings, but also beneath its streets.
