Thornbury, High Street looking north along High Street (1920)

This wonderful circa January 1920 view looking north along High Street in Thornbury captures suburban Melbourne during a period when many outer districts were still developing into thriving communities. I can imagine horse-drawn carts, early motorcars, and pedestrians moving slowly along the broad roadway lined with small shops and local businesses. Thornbury at the time still carried a semi-rural atmosphere compared to the busy Melbourne CBD. The streetscape feels open and spacious, with modest commercial buildings and tramlines helping shape the suburb’s future growth. The atmosphere would have felt calm, community-focused, and full of possibility as Melbourne expanded outward during the early twentieth century. Today, scenes like this beautifully preserve the origins of one of Melbourne’s best-known northern suburbs.
