The Cook Labor Government has opened a new round of grants worth up to $100,000 per tree planting project, helping local governments replace trees lost to the shot-hole borer and planting projects that expand urban canopy, strengthen biodiversity and help futureproof suburbs against rising temperatures.

More trees mean more shade, cooler streets, stronger biodiversity and healthier communities.

This June, take a few minutes to make sure your smoke alarms are ready when you need them most.

Smoke alarms provide an early warning in the event of a fire, often before you can see or smell smoke, especially while you're asleep. But like any safety device, they need regular maintenance to keep working properly.

Take action today and remember to:

• Test your smoke alarm by pressing the test button
• Clean your smoke alarm to remove dust and insects
• Check the replacement date
• Replace smoke alarms that are more than 10 years old
• Check and replace batteries where required, including backup batteries in mains-powered alarms

Common issues such as flat batteries, dust build-up, disconnected alarms or ageing units can prevent smoke alarms from working when it matters most.

A few simple checks could make all the difference in an emergency.
