The Reality of Blending Old vs. New Timber 🪵
Renovating an older property often means installing new timber right next to the original floorboards. Because wood patinates over decades, getting a cohesive look between different eras is incredibly complex.
For this project, our builder client needed to bridge a 20-year age gap in Spotted Gum flooring. The goal? Completely neutralize the heavy red tones in favor of a modern, trend-forward classic luxurious oak aesthetic.
Because post-COVID timber shortages mean new lumber acts completely differently than aged wood, a standard sand-and-coat wasn’t going to work. We had to treat the floor as two distinct zones to get them to meet in the middle:
The 20-Year-Old Timber: Chemically bleached to lift the deep, patinated dark tones.
The New Timber: Treated with a custom color blend stain to add depth and match the original grain.
We unified the entire layout with a premium, Rubio Monocoat oil finish for a seamless, low-maintenance matte look. While a 100% exact match between two completely different generations of wood is impossible, extensive testing allowed us to deliver a beautifully blended, high-end result.
