The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions is hopeful the Gloucester Tree will reopen to climbers in a couple of months.

The 61-metre-tall tree in Pemberton has been closed to the public since 2023 as work is carried out to make it safe. It was scheduled to reopen for the New Year but will remain closed possibly until Easter.

Executive Director of Parks and Visitor Services Rod Annear says the complicated project has taken more time than expected.

"So, it involves a fairly high degree of complexity in installing the structure so we can protect the tree, make sure we give it its best chance of having a long life and also to meet some strict engineering and safety requirement," said Mr Annear.

"We've got a reasonably high degree of confidence the work will be completed by the end of March, so that will be in time for Easter - but there is still significant customisation required to fix the platform in place once we get it there."

Cecile Leclere and her husband Adrien opened their business Aerial Adventures right next to the tree shortly before it closed. She said although they sympathise with the process, they can't help but be disappointed with another opening delay.

However, Ms Leclere told Stan Shaw on ABC South West Breakfast despite being closed, the tree remains a hugely popular attraction.

"We've actually got people coming, even though they know it's closed, just to see it, just to talk about it," said Ms Leclere.

"It's very much in the heart of locals and internationals - I've had some people from overseas telling they climbed it 40 years ago and they still come back and see it, and they know it's closed but they want to show their kids and grandkids... it really is a star."

DBCA has been busy working with arborists and contractors getting the iconic Gloucester Tree ready for climbing again – and we’re almost there! It’s been a long but thorough process, and we appreciate everyone’s patience. We have worked diligently to save this climbing adventure so it can be enjoyed for future generations, while preserving the tree’s health and longevity.

We’ve made great progress in preparing the tree, including replacing the climbing mesh and pegs and building the platform offsite. We recently inspected the platform fabrication, and some final refinements are being completed.

Once fabrication is complete, the platform will be transported to site for installation.

The contractor will meet with our specialist arborist to confirm the best method for securing the structure to the tree and lifting it into the canopy, ensuring the tree’s health and contractor safety are a top priority. Then, an engineer will inspect everything before opening, and once certified, the tree will be ready for climbers!

While we can’t confirm an exact reopening date yet, every step brings us closer to welcoming climbers back early in the new year.

In the meantime, the Aerial Adventure Pemberton high ropes course is open and ready for thrill-seekers!

CLIMBING ICON TO REOPEN 🌳

Good news for fans of the Gloucester Tree – the iconic climbing tree in Pemberton is expected to reopen by the end of the year!

Structural issues and safety concerns saw the tree closed to the public in 2023.

Manjimup’s Precision Contracting has since been selected to construct a new lookout platform at the tree.

The new viewing platform will sit 37 metres off the ground, a much lower height compared to the previous 61-metre platform.
