Important changes are coming to the Australian property market from 1 July 2026.

Under new AML/CTF (Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing) legislation, real estate agencies will be required to verify the identity of buyers and sellers as part of the property transaction process.

What does this mean for you?

• Identity verification will be required using standard identification documents.
• You may be asked to provide evidence of property ownership and the source of funds being used in the transaction.
• These checks will form part of the sales process before a property can proceed to settlement.

While this introduces an additional step, the purpose is to protect buyers, sellers and the integrity of Australia's property market by helping prevent illegal funds from entering the system.
