A Challenging Site in MacMahons Point. A Bigger Vision.

A heritage setting. Neighbours’ city views. An ambitious brief. Making these work together takes more than good design. It takes architecture, urban design and planning expertise working as one.

North Sydney Council recently approved this project, which brings contemporary additions to an existing terrace, extended office space, and two new apartments into a carefully considered scheme.

At Dickson Rothschild, we bring the big-picture thinking developed on large projects to the precise challenges of smaller sites. The result: a design that makes room for more while respecting what matters.

Lindfield Approval: Height and Scale Recognised in a Changing Context

Dickson Rothschild contributed to the successful Court approval of a proposed development in Lindfield, just 400 metres from the town centre.

Our visual assessment and Urban Design expert report demonstrated how the proposal’s height and scale responded appropriately to its strategic location and the evolving character of the surrounding area.

The Court determined that the proposed building’s height and scale were reasonable within an area undergoing transition, reinforcing the importance of accurate, balanced urban design analysis in supporting well-considered development outcomes.

Rose Bay Breakthrough: Context-Led Design Recognised

Working closely with Mark Shapiro Architects and GSA Planning, Dickson Rothschild helped the client secure a significant outcome through Section 34 mediation in the NSW Land and Environment Court for a residential proposal in Rose Bay.

Situated in one of Sydney’s most contested planning environments, the proposal demonstrated its suitability within Rose Bay’s changing character and development pattern while remaining sensitive to the established residential context.

The outcome reinforces the value of a rigorous, site-responsive design approach in navigating change and shaping the future of established neighbourhoods.

Another LEC win for our client, Orosi

We’re pleased to share another successful outcome for our client, Orosi, in the Land and Environment Court.

Dickson Rothschild acted as the urban design expert in a refused application for additional storeys to a development in Randwick, assessed under the LMR policy.

The judgment recognised the quality of the proposed design, with the Court noting that the parties and their expert consultants had each “strived to achieve an outstanding development on this Site.”

A strong result for Orosi and a testament to the value of thoughtful urban design in shaping better development outcomes.

Celebrating Successful Approval with Place Studio for this Roseville Multi-Residential Development

Dickson Rothschild’s Urban Design team played a crucial role in reimagining the original design. By transforming a bulky building into separate wings and incorporating an atrium, we improved circulation, light, and the overall outlook. Our approach focused on how the development integrates with the area's evolving character and enhances views of the nearby park.

Thanks to a smooth Section 34 agreement, we avoided a potentially lengthy and costly process at the Land and Environment Court, enabling a more efficient path forward for this exciting project that aligns with Ku-ring-gai Council’s Alternative TOD Plan, which is now being adopted into their DCP.

Enhancing Industrial Proposals through Urban Design

Urban design can play a crucial role in the success of industrial development proposals. A notable example is the recent victory by Kennards Self Storage in the Land and Environment Court. In close collaboration with the client and design architect, beneficial modifications were made to the design regarding landscaping, setbacks, building height, and facades, enabling approval for what will be a significantly expanded facility in Miranda’s industrial valley.

Western Sydney Aerotropolis: Advancing Urban Development with ESR Kect

Our successful collaboration with ESR, a global leader in industrial development, has secured Development Approval for a cutting-edge warehouse and distribution centre in the heart of the Western Sydney Aerotropolis. This facility spans over 13,000 sqm and is strategically situated in an area designated for such industrial uses, minimising conflicts with residential developments.

Our urban design team has focused on enhancing the site’s entrance to address the council’s concerns about visual impact and landscaping. Despite meeting all planning requirements, the client had to seek court approval for the scheme.

This project represents one of two significant ESR developments in the Aerotropolis, with another larger facility currently in the court process. With our strong ties to the region, we look forward to further contributing to the sustainable growth and vibrancy of Greater Western Sydney.
