After weeks of intense negotiations with Washington, Prime Minister Mark Carney has suspended trade talks, recalled Canada’s negotiating team from the U.S., and vowed to match Donald Trump’s new 50% tariffs “dollar for dollar.”
The decision came after the two countries failed to finalize a trade deal before Trump’s deadline. The new U.S. tariffs took effect at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, hitting billions of dollars worth of Canadian goods.
Trump had previously claimed “we have a deal”, but Canadian officials said crucial details and legal language remained unresolved.
Now, Ottawa is saying enough is enough.
Carney said last-minute changes to the U.S. position were “unfair, uneconomic” and raised serious questions about the reliability of any agreement.
Canada’s objectives were clear: protect broad access to the U.S. market, reduce tariffs on key Canadian industries and protect Canadian businesses.
When those objectives could not be secured, Canada walked away.
🇨🇦 And Canada is not simply absorbing the blow.
Carney said Canada will respond “dollar for dollar” to the new U.S. tariffs, with additional support for affected Canadian workers and businesses to be announced in the coming days.
The U.S. says Canada was responsible for the collapse of negotiations, arguing Ottawa rejected terms that had been agreed earlier in the week.
But from Canada’s perspective, accepting a deal that leaves unfair tariffs on Canadian industries was not good enough.
The proposed agreement reportedly would have lowered — but not eliminated — U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum and autos, while Canada would have addressed Washington’s complaints over U.S. alcohol, auto tariffs and dairy quotas.
Instead, Canada chose to hold its ground.
And perhaps most importantly, this isn't simply about one round of tariffs.
The new measures put the future of CUSMA free trade negotiations in question, raising an even bigger issue about Canada's economic relationship with its largest trading partner.
🍁 Canada has spent months negotiating. Canada has offered compromises. Canada has tried to reach a deal.
But a partnership cannot be built on one side continually demanding more.
If the U.S. chooses tariffs, Canada has now made its answer clear: dollar for dollar.
