Here is how to give it a quick checkup today:

1 - Listen: Do you hear it humming and kicking on?

2 - The Float Test: Pour a bucket of water slowly into the pit. The float should rise, trigger the pump, and quickly drain the water.

3 - The Discharge: Step outside and make sure the exterior pipe is clear and water is actively rushing out away from the house.

Backup: If the power goes out during an Alberta summer storm, a standard sump pump stops. If you have a finished basement, investing in a battery backup is one of the best ways to protect your property value.

If you’re viewing a house on a rainy day, don’t cancel your viewing, it’s the perfect weather to check for these 3 things:

1- The Spouts: Are the downspouts attached and extending at least 6 feet away from the foundation? (If they’re dumping right at the base of the wall, that water is headed straight for the basement).

2 - The Pools: Is water pooling right against the siding, or is it sloping safely away toward the street or swales? Saturated soil puts immense hydrostatic pressure on foundation walls.

3 - The Gutters: Are they overflowing like waterfalls? That usually means a hidden blockage of leaves or debris is forcing water backward under the shingles.

Catching a grading or gutter issue during a heavy July storm is much cheaper than finding mould later.
