Children with autism who are non-verbal or have other developmental disabilities can easily wander away, yet without the immediate threat of abduction, these cases may not trigger an alert. It is essential to recognize that their inability to communicate and understand danger puts them at a heightened risk. According to Autism Canada, an estimated 49% of children with autism are prone to wandering, highlighting a dire need for immediate attention to this matter. This is a proposal to widen the criteria to include all missing children who are deemed at risk due to medical, developmental, or communication challenges, regardless of evidence indicating an actual abduction. An "At Risk Alert" could bridge this gap, allowing law enforcement to disseminate information swiftly and effectively, increasing the likelihood of a safe recovery.
