Unverified , September 17, 2026: Counterfeit Dilaudid/hydromorphine 8mg tablet suspected to contain Fentanyl in Cape Breton County.

We have received a report from a community source regarding counterfeit Dilaudid/hydromorphine 8mg tablet, described as a "white triangular tablet", suspected to contain Fentanyl in Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia.

How to Stay Safe: Let someone know, start low, and go slow

✔ Expect the unexpected – Always assume street drugs may not be what you think and contain drugs different from, or stronger than, you expect. Pills that look like real medicine could be fake.

✔ Do NOT use drugs alone – Use with someone you trust, at a Supervised Consumption Site, or call the National Overdose Response Service (NORS) at 1-888-688-NORS. They will stay on the phone with you while you use, so they can get help if needed.

✔ Go low and start slow – Use a small amount of a drug to see how it affects you first before using more. Take frequent breaks between uses.

✔ Call 911 immediately for any overdose – Even if naloxone is used, emergency help is still needed.

✔ Have naloxone ready: Naloxone will reverse the effects of opioids and help restore breathing. Always give naloxone if you think someone is overdosing. It won't cause harm if opioids are not involved, and it may save a life if they are. Even if the person does not wake up, continue rescue breathing if trained, call 911, and stay with them until help arrives.

✔ Provide rescue breaths. Naloxone will NOT work on other substances, such as tranquilizers like medetomidine and xylazine or benzodiazepines. Naloxone may not restore consciousness if other sedatives are involved. If breathing is less than every 6 seconds or pulse is faint, perform CPR, including rescue breaths, until help arrives.

✔ Avoid mixing drugs – Combining opioids, benzodiazepines, and alcohol increases the risk of overdose and death.

✔ Consider your surroundings before using – Street drugs may contain sedatives that could cause unconsciousness for an extended time. Use somewhere that you will not be exposed to safety risks or extreme heat or cold conditions whenever possible.

✔ Go to a supervised consumption site – If available in your area, these sites provide a safe space to use drugs with medical staff who can help in case of an emergency.

• PeerSix Sydney: 75 Prince St. (902-567-1766)

🆘 If someone overdoses:

• Call 911 immediately – Tell them someone is unresponsive.

• Give naloxone if you have it. More than one dose may be needed if high potency opioids are involved. If there are no opioids, naloxone will be ineffective but will not cause harm – give it anyway.

• Stay with them.

• If breathing is less than every 6 seconds or pulse faint, perform CPR including rescue breaths until help arrives.

• If breathing is restored, place them in the recovery position on their side and wait for EHS.

A family celebration becomes a Joan’s Table meal 🍽️❤️

At the end of August, two families came together to celebrate the wedding of their loved ones. That evening, they generously delivered extra food from the celebration to the tenants at The Rebuilding.

The gratitude expressed by the staff and tenants is a wonderful reminder of the difference your support makes. Here’s what they shared:

“It is such a joy to be included in your family’s special celebration. Your generosity gives our tenants the opportunity to enjoy a delicious meal together and reminds them that people in the community are thinking of them and care about their well-being.”

They also mentioned how great the food was:

“The food this evening was truly a special occasion for the tenants. They were thrilled to see such an impressive spread of BBQ ribs and chicken, corn on the cob, salads, and cornbread. One tenant even took off running to retrieve a plate because he was so excited by the food.”

In addition to nourishment, your meals provide connection and, often, celebration. This is how we build a stronger community.

This month, we are honoured to feature Joshua O’Riley, AKA LoveSelf, as our Community Champion.

Joshua is a Belfast-born, Halifax-based musician, singer-songwriter and producer who performs under the name LoveSelf. Earlier this year, Joshua held the first No One Left Outside (NOLO) benefit concert in support of Shelter Nova Scotia, raising over $500. Joshua explains:

“The idea for NOLO came after I watched a documentary about Fugazi. The documentary showed me how much positive change can come from a single concert, and I realized that a benefit show was something I could actually create using the skills and experience I’d developed through music. That’s where NOLO — No One Left Outside — came from.”

Joshua shared that NOLO is about more than raising money. Some of the young people who attended the first event were also looking for somewhere they could feel safe, connected and heard.

“That made me realize that music can create a sense of community and belonging as well. That’s what I want NOLO to continue becoming: a vehicle for connection and community, as well as a way of raising support for people who need it.”

Joshua is now planning a second NOLO event this fall:

“Ultimately, I’d love to see NOLO grow into a grassroots movement that can support people experiencing homelessness and, eventually, speak to other issues affecting people who feel left out, bullied or alone.”

For anyone who wants to give back and make a difference in their community, Joshua shares why Shelter Nova Scotia is a good place to start:

“The people behind the organization are real people who understand the issue and are working directly with the people affected by it. If you donate, your money is going toward something tangible and meaningful. If you volunteer, you’re giving your time and energy to something that can make a real difference.”

We are so grateful to have Joshua’s support, and we are inspired by his desire to bring the community together through music. We look forward to sharing the details of the NOLO II event once the date has been announced. In the meantime, be sure to check out LoveSelf at loveselfmusic.ca.
