The Bank of Canada held its key policy interest rate steady at 2.25% on September 2, 2026.

Announcement Details Overnight Rate: Maintained at 2.25% (seventh consecutive hold).

Bank Rate: 2.5%

7 New Ontario Rent Rules Coming In September 2026

1. 7-Day N4 Notice: The minimum termination period on an N4 notice for non-payment of rent drops from 14 days to 7 days for monthly and yearly tenancies.

2. Persistent Late Payment Standard: A clear legal definition is introduced—being more than 7 days late on rent at least 3 times in a 6-month period can officially support an N8 notice.

3. 50% Arrears Rule: Tenants may be required to pay 50% of claimed rent arrears into the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) process before raising certain Section 82 issues at a hearing.

4. Personal-Use Eviction (N12) Waiver: Landlords can waive the mandatory 1-month compensation requirement, but only if they provide an extended notice period of at least 120 days.

5. Bad Faith Rebuttable Presumption: A new 60-day occupancy rule means it is presumed a landlord acted in bad faith if the designated personal-use occupant does not move in within the expected timeframe.

6. Renovation Protections (N13): New regulations formalize stricter notification rules and clearer tenant right-of-first-refusal protections following major repairs.

7. Faster LTB Enforcement Frameworks: Additional operational changes streamline scheduling and minimize procedural delays for unresolved disputes.

(Note: Rules implemented earlier on July 1, 2026, included doubled maximum fines up to $100,000 for individuals and $500,000 for corporations, a reduced LTB review window from 30 to 15 days, mandatory official payment agreement forms, and the right for tenants to install portable A/C

Ontario tenants who miss a rent payment will face a dramatically shorter window to act starting September 21, 2026.

With wildfire smoke impacting air quality across Ontario, many homeowners are wondering what they can do to help maintain the air quality inside their homes.

While you can't control outdoor air quality, there are steps you can take to help reduce the amount of smoke and airborne particles entering your home.

What You Can Do

✅ Run your HVAC system with a high-quality air filter. If your system uses a high-efficiency filter, such as a HEPA filter, it may help capture some of the fine particles found in wildfire smoke.

✅ Turn off your HRV or ERV (if you have one). Heat Recovery Ventilators (HRVs) and Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs) are designed to bring fresh outdoor air into your home. During periods of poor outdoor air quality, turning them off may help reduce the amount of smoke entering your home.

✅ Check your air filter. If your area experiences prolonged smoke conditions, it's a good idea to inspect your filter more frequently than usual and replace it as recommended by the manufacturer.
